About JCF Audio

I started JCF Audio officially in 2004 with a few rolls of solder and a conviction that I could provide improved analog/digital conversion systems in a field that embraces new technology with open arms while still recognizing the virtues of the old.

My audio engineering studies at Berklee College of Music provided me with a strong understanding of both analog and digital systems; using them together during a period of time when the industry was in transition between the two. Digital workstations were new and promised a bright future where manipulation of audio was easier, cheap, and efficient. There are all sorts of powerful tools that the digital realm affords; algorithms that have the effect of looking forward and backward in time and reacting accordingly, convolution reverbs, spatial effects, etc. I spent years designing and coding plugins for this new technology.

In 2001 I moved to California and began work at The Mastering Lab under the tutelage of Doug Sax and several others. I immersed myself in the analog audio world, and became more appreciative of simplicity in analog audio processing and transmission systems. I also quickly became aware of the great deal of sonic, and more importantly musical, dissatisfaction among users of digital systems as their use in the professional industry became more pervasive. I decided to address this problem.

We should be able to utilize the unique, convenient nature of digital workstations while not sacrificing professional workflow and high quality sound that analog recording techniques have provided for years. I simply try to provide tools that satisfy the desire for control without consequently detracting from musical gestures with their use.

Thank you,
Joshua Florian
